A survey by FlexJobs found that 70% of professionals would be more loyal to their employer if they had flexible work options. Meanwhile, the Society for Human Resource Management found that 80% of millennials place a high value on flexible work arrangements, such as the ability to work from home. Gen-Z workers prioritize job flexibility even more, with KPMG finding that 89% of them value it.

For this generation, the new long-term encompasses personal and professional development, work-life balance, and meaningful work. PwC found that 80% of Gen-Z workers prioritize opportunities for career progression and personal development, while nearly 70% value work-life balance.

Changing jobs is no longer seen as a negative thing, with many young workers opting to switch jobs more frequently in search of better opportunities. The World Economic Forum found that job security has become less important for workers, with many indicating that they would be willing to trade job security for other benefits, such as flexible work arrangements and meaningful work. The National Bureau of Economic Research found that job hopping (staying in a job for less than two years) has become more common among young workers, with nearly 30% of workers aged 25 to 34 changing jobs in a given year. In contrast, just 20% of workers aged 55 and older switch jobs that frequently.

The understanding of what constitutes short-term and long-term has also shifted. For Gen-Z, short-term means less than two years, and long-term means more than three years, according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is in contrast to Gen X (born 1965-1980), who see short-term as less than five years, and long-term as more than ten years. Millennials (born 1981-1996) view short-term as less than three years, and long-term as more than five years.

In conclusion, the younger workforce is changing the way we think about the workplace. For Gen-Z, job security and longevity are no longer the top priorities. Instead, flexibility, personal growth, and work-life balance are becoming increasingly important. As a result, employers must adapt to meet the needs of their workers and provide a balanced approach that focuses on stability and flexibility.

Unfortunately, many workplaces are plagued by toxic cultures from overworking (often working on weekends or past hours) to having tyrant managers, inappropriate banter, no opportunity for growth, silent team meetings, these experiences can exacerbate stress and lead to burnout. Burnout is a mental and emotional exhaustion that often includes physical health complications. No job, opportunity, externship, or internship is worth your life. 

This article will explore the various ways to respond to toxic work environments and give practical tips on what individuals can do to protect themselves from burnout and improve their overall well-being, even if that means quitting.

What to do: Find an Employer/ Manager/ Team You Align With

In a time that burnout, mental health and being overworked is recognized more than ever researching your employer before you ever experience neglect is important. Doing extensive research on companies you apply to before signing an offer letter is paramount. Google the company’s internal culture, brand, values, mission statement and decide if they align with yours. If you find out your manager researching their background can also help you handle situations. Determining if  they value family, do they have a life outside of work and other factors can help you all empathise with each other.

What to do: Say No & Mean It

Easier said than done however, extremely necessary. Setting boundaries as early in your career will be the difference in your mental health. Regardless if it’s your first job or 30th anniversary at a company, learning to keep a balanced life is the difference between life and death.Even at jobs that are a part of your career with the best coworkers and a great company still should include the full sentence of “No.” Saying no is not always the easiest but following up with alternative ideas or support help you make the boundary and keep it. Also consider turning off work notifications after office hours, 

Tiktokers Laura, and DeAndre surround their content with tips on how to not only recognize your boundaries and non-negotiables within the workspace but how to respond. Another helpful tool to type an email when you can’t find the words is ChatGPT. 
What to do: Quit 

If you did your research, set your boundaries and your workplace is still shaming you for not overworking. If your position or promotion is being hung over your head when you mentioned not staying late. It is time to go. While not available for everyone, talk about negotiation to get your terms in writing. Regardless, remember to keep your resume sharp, LinkedIn updated and go to a recruiter coffee chat here and there. Why is purpose important?

The BBC reports,  “Separate McKinsey research from 2022 showed 70% of employees say their personal sense of purpose is defined by their work, and when that work feels meaningful, they perform better, are much more committed and are about half as likely to go looking for a new job.” Mrs. Universe shared that purpose is ‘something that evolves you find over time and can change overtime.”

Specifically for women who are doing purpose-driven work, Juanita challenges them to lift as they climb and make a difference in the lives of others. While on your journey to find your purpose remember what is important.  She encourages working parents to set their priorities before the opportunity comes because “I don’t believe in work-life balance,” nothing can balance or be equal to her children, she explains.

Twenty wannabe consultants, two representatives, and then there’s you. You panic. We’re here to tell you to relax and that feeling this way is normal. However, it’s really important to expose yourself and be bold in these “circles of death.” Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is the only way to make it through these events and finally make some valuable, genuine connections. Management consulting recruiting is an art with a little bit of science mixed in!

2. It’s all about cases

Once you’ve made a couple of good connections, it’s time to start preparing for your case interviews. There are tons of resources to help you prepare for these, so don’t fret. It is important to not feel overwhelmed when something seems unsolvable. With grit and sustained motivation, you’ll learn from your mistakes and cases will become natural for you. Oh yeah, make sure to keep networking during this phase so you get onto “closed lists” for interviews.
