blogging mistakes to avoid

Expert Panel: Blogging mistakes to avoid after the Google Core update

This July, Google Search Liaison announced a Google Core update regarding the quality of content published by websites. Therefore, there will be fluctuations in your content online search results and visibility for everyone involved in content marketing and blogging.

These kinds of updates are necessary for google search engine users. So that the visitors can have high-quality content that is helpful to them. However, it makes life a little bit more exciting for digital marketers and SEO professionals. They need to update and produce content that will perform well with search engines upcoming updates. The journey starts with finding all the new tricks to make your content succeed. Sadly, some tricks perform worse than others.

We in Expert Circle do not know everything, thus, we have reached out to a number of experts from our extensive network to share the blogging mistakes to avoid.

Tabitha Naylor

The big mistake is not to make your blogging and content practices evergreen

SEO is a fast-paced industry, with Google at the forefront. Google makes thousands of updates annually to the search algorithm to improve user experience and quality of search results. Twice a year, there are broad core updates which affect website ranking across thousands of sites.

Google maintains that any changes experienced post-update are not deliberate or targeted at specific sites. That said, how can your website weather updates and SEO trends and stay relevant?

  • Deliver better quality content that serves users’ needs
  • Improve the user experience on your site

Here are 2 ways to improve user experience and content quality:

1. Answer the Search Query in the Title and Introduction

SEO trends in recent years have shifted towards long-form content to increase the user’s time on the site as well as the authority and expertise quality rankings. While in-depth, long-form content leans more towards storytelling.

However, with the rise of zero-click searches as Google seeks to improve search result relevance, search engines want you to give the searcher what they’re looking for as fast as possible.

Get rid of the fluff.

Give a summarized answer to the search query in your content’s introduction or soon after then draw the customer in with more detail in the rest of the article.

2. Improve User Experience of Your Content

Usability is a key area of Google’s Core Web Vitals that are increasingly targeting the algorithm towards user-centric metrics such as site interactivity, loading time and visual stability.

On the content end of user experience, you need to optimize your content to give the user what they need as quickly as possible.

Make your content easily scannable with shorter paragraphs and creative, value-adding sub-headings that keep the article on track.
Add visual breaks like informative images, lists, tables and infographics to provide memorable mini-summaries of your content throughout
Present your content in a well-written, structured format that is easily navigable without ad pop-up clutter.

The key to creating evergreen content is to create content that goes quickly to the core and to present it in an easily digestible way.

The following should be kept in mind for blogging based on my personal experience:

  1. Relevant up to date content that connects to a wider audience
  2. Proper research of the topic and relevant keywords to draw the attention of the audience
  3. Not comprising on the quality even if the post is shorter but it should be worth the value
  4. To be updated on what’s happening in society or your industry, i.e. to be synced with the marco scenario

Priya Florence Shah

Group Editor at SHEROES

Our sites did well after the 2021 June Core Update. All of the work we invested in collaborating with experts on SHEROES and Naaree.com to create authoritative content paid off and we saw a significant increase in traffic and backlinks. So our sites are doing even better after the Core update.

Our focus has been on creating content that meets Google’s E-A-T guidelines. On SHEROES we have a number of Champions and subject-matter experts who contribute their expertise to help the community. We work with them to write blog posts that are useful, answer our audience’s questions and have information based on years of expertise.

All our efforts are aimed at helping Indian women become financially and emotionally independent so our content also focuses on topics and themes that do that.

During the pandemic, there was a great deal of interest in ways to earn money from home. We saw a huge spike in traffic on work from home and remote work and interest in remote work and careers one can do from home continue to grow.

Our social commerce venture, SHECO, which offers women a way to earn money from their mobile phones got a lot of interest and creating content around that has been immensely useful.

Our new SHOPonSHEROES online store builder helps women start a store and sell their products and services on the SHEROES portal so we’re creating a lot of content around business startups and promotion.

Sadly, the pandemic also saw an increase in domestic abuse issues, so we saw a lot of traffic to our free online counselling services and helpline and this trend doesn’t seem to be decreasing.

Given all these trends we’re seeing and the things we’ve learned over the last year or so, here’s my answer to the question “What are the blogging mistakes to avoid in 2021 after the Google Core update?”

Avoid fluffy content, focus on authoritative long-form content and collaborate with experts to write content that you’re not qualified to write. Build authoritative links to your content and follow the advice of SEO experts like Brian Dean, John Lincoln, Neil Patel and Matt Diggity.

The biggest mistake people are still making is that they are solely focused on the discovery and not the user experience. Their goal is to grow their rankings and optimise for bots but they ignore making the content readable to a normal human.

Ekta Swarnkar

After the core web vitals update, we just can’t ignore the site speed factor. If you don’t lie in the low-speed parameter, you are not going to rank. No matter how awesome your content is.

That’s why the things that you may have ignored in the past can be your worst blogging mistakes.

But if you are a bit cautious about them, it can magically help you rank higher.

The worst blogging mistake would be not having a well-optimized blog theme.

A poor blog theme can make your site load slowly because of poorly coded files. It can break your site.

While a good and lightweight theme can help you load your content faster and hence rank higher.

Two of my favourite blog themes that are optimized for speed are Astra and Generatepress.

I use the Astra theme and it has helped me a lot in improving my site speed.

The blogging mistake to avoid is reacting to the update and trying to shift your blogging approach to match Google’s new algorithms. Since updates are continues, you should keep your focus on creating high-quality content. The more valuable and unique your content is, the more likely it’ll produce good search results in any climate.

Joydeep Bhattacharya

CEO at Seosandwitch

If you are into blogging, then I would strongly suggest to keep the content quality to the highest standards. There are so many new blogs being launched every day. The competition is naturally higher and Google algorithms are working harder to rank only the freshest, accurate, and unique content pieces that helps the readers.

As a blogger, here are some mistakes to avoid in 2021:

1- Don’t compromise on the content quality. Perform a 10x content analysis to check the top ranking pages for your primary keyword and prepare content that is 10 times better than your competitors.
2- Avoid buying links because Google is strictly against the practice of paid links. Publish quality content regularly and this should help you naturally acquire links in the long run.
3- Don’t forget page speed and core web vitals. Use the search console to check for issues and choose the fastest site theme so that your website runs super fast.

As a blogger – you should focus on three things – content quality, link quality, and website speed.

As I wrote in my article Beginner Blogger Mistakes most of a blog’s traffic comes from organic search — users will look for something on a search engine and then click on your blog if it fits their search criteria. Because so many organisations seek your audience’s attention, it’s critical to avoid typical blog blunders.

There are many mistakes that I can point out. I have outlined the top 8 mistakes that I have seen.

Mistake: You only consider topics that are of personal interest to you.

While ideas may arrive at random times, they should never be random. Just because it’s a nice concept in general – or something that personally fascinates you – doesn’t imply it’s a good idea for your organisation. Think of the purpose of your blog; if it is to help people, then the post should be like a tool to help your intended audience.

Mistake: You forget about your readers.

If you want your blog material to be successful, it must connect with your readers and compel them to act. One of the most common errors is believing that your content will perform when you haven’t considered your audience or the activities you want them to do. If you’re not consciously thinking about your audience’s pains, you’re just creating content for content’s sake, which is a waste of resources.

Mistake: Your writing is very rigid.

Writing a blog post is not the same as writing a term paper. Bloggers that are just starting generally only have experience with the latter. The writing style of a term paper is not the writing that people love reading. Most individuals who see your content will not read it all the way through. If you want to keep people engaged, you must urge them to keep reading by writing in an easy-to-read manner. Make your writing more conversational; the more approachable your writing is, the more people will like reading it. So, simplify your writing.

Mistake: You believe that people are interested in you as a writer.

It may sound harsh, but it is true: When people first begin blogging, they believe that their audience would be naturally interested in their experiences and hobbies… but this is not the case. It’s not a criticism of them as people; it’s just that when you’re new, no one is interested in you or your experiences. People are far more interested in what you can teach them. You may, however, incorporate aspects of your personality into your writing to make readers feel more at ease with you. It is totally up to you how you do this. To add personality to your writing, search for methods to connect with your readers about the issue you’re writing about.

Mistake: You digress.

Don’t bring up too many personal experiences that bury the point you’re trying to make. The finest blog articles commit to a larger idea and then gradually express it numerous times in little ways from start to finish. Then, in each part of the article, restate your position and repeat it again and again.

Mistake: Your subjects are very wide.

When people first start writing, they usually want to write about very broad themes, often far too wide. It is critical to nail down very precise blog themes if you want to get the ground running with your first few entries. More focused subjects attract smaller, more targeted audiences, which are higher quality and more likely to convert into leads and customers.

Mistake: Your writing is a mental dump.

The stream-of-conscious writing style isn’t ideal for blog postings. Most people will scan your blog entries rather than read them. Therefore, they must be well arranged. First, make a list of the main takeaways you want your readers to acquire from your post. Then, divide those key points into larger section headings. When you include a section header every few paragraphs, your blog article becomes easier to read, which is beneficial for SEO.

Mistake: You do not rely on data as proof.

Arguments and statements become considerably more persuasive when facts and research support them. As marketers, we must not only persuade people to support us on a subject, but we must also persuade them to act. In every excellent tale, you’ll provide a major point, provide evidence, and conclude with a takeaway for the audience. Data may be used in blog articles to establish your primary point and demonstrate why it is important to your readers or as evidence throughout the piece.

Expert Panel: Recommended resources before starting a business

Starting up a business is challenging! You understand the struggle if this applies to you. Any experience counts and can make or break a successful start-up and one that fails due to lack of expertise. Thus, no matter how great the small business idea is with no expertise, it will be challenging but not impossible to start running a business. That expertise can come from multiple sources such as a business advisor, books, webinars, podcasts, the Web in general, etc. There is a lot of excellent learning content on starting a business, business plan template, and writing a business plan, including here on Expert Circle. We have reached our network of experts and here is what they suggest.

Susan Ward

Co-head of Cypress Technologies, an IT consulting business

The good news is that anyone can start a business. The bad news is that starting a business that succeeds and continues to flourish isn’t so easy. Here are 5 resources I have identified that an entrepreneur needs before starting a business.

First – Be Fully Committed

You must put your heart and soul into what you’re doing, believe in your product or service, and be willing to put in long hours to complete all of the duties necessary to build and sustain a firm. When you start a business, you must be willing to make sacrifices such as forgoing vacations or even a paycheck for what may appear to be an indefinite time.

Second – Be a “Type D”

“Type D” person—someone who has a desire for success coupled with drive, discipline, and determination. You need discipline and determination as these traits are what give successful business people the fuel to follow through on their business ideas and endure the ups and downs of the economic climate.

Third – Get Smarter

Many people have tried to start a business without acquiring the business knowledge they need to make their business a success and, as a result, their businesses have failed.

To start a business, you have to be knowledgeable about many different aspects of business and have a variety of skills, or hire people who have the skills you lack.

If you aren’t knowledgeable enough about accounting to keep your own books, for instance, you’ll need to hire an expert

Fourth – Find Adequate Startup Money

Finding adequate business start-up money is especially critical because there’s no guarantee that your business is going to make money right away, and often initial income is too low to live on. In fact, the lack of adequate funds is a top reason most small businesses fail.

Fifth – The Business Support You Need

You may be in business by yourself, but no business succeeds without a good support system. As an entrepreneur, you need interpersonal skills, team-building skills, and leadership skills, as you’ll need to work with others including vendors, employees or freelancers, customers, and other support resources to have business success.

When you’re thinking of business support, look first to the home front. Your family should be your number one cheerleader when it comes to your success. A supportive spouse can be there to listen to your ideas or problems and provide the encouragement or advice that keeps you going.

Starting a new business can be daunting, especially if your resources are limited. Luckily if you have the right mindset, patience and energy you can grow your new business from the ground up. Since my area of expertise is marketing, much of this article will focus on marketing tools. Launching a business online is the most cost-effective way to get started but there are a few things to consider first.

Some general advice is always to see if you can get something done for free before paying for it. Once you find what you need, test, test and test again. Invest in a working solution and scale after consistent success.

The first thing you need to establish is how to stay organized. Being organized shouldn’t be an expensive experience, for that reason, I suggest using Google Docs to manage all of your documents online. This cloud-based service is free and allows you to collaborate with your team if they have Gmail addresses. The downside is that it’s not the most secure service so if you’re willing to pay a little more, you can use a service like Monday.com or Confluence by Atlassian to manage your team’s documentation.

The next thing to consider is your planning tools. Timelines and deadlines can be managed with Trello. It’s easy to use and free to set up. Trello utilizes boards to manage the flow of projects and it’s easy to customize your project flow according to your business needs. You can also assign specific tasks to people, attach files and align goals. Furthermore, you have access to loads of project templates to give you a head start.

Marketing is arguably one of the most important facets of a new business. Always start with social media since this is an easy place to grow an audience and get meaningful insights. Set up profiles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit. This depends on the services you are offering but having profiles on each of these platforms increases your visibility.

You will also need a tool to manage all of your social media. Later.com offers a very good solution for managing your social profiles. With the free plan, you can get automated posting and scheduling across all social media platforms. However, for the most value, you’ll want to take a paid plan since it gives you access to analytics across your social media.

In the sphere of marketing, you’ll want a system to manage communications with your customers. GetResponse offers a great customer relationship management solution (CRM). It integrates easily with social media platforms, websites and eCommerce platforms. Additionally, you can send emails that are triggered by specific events like a sign-up or a follow up to a purchase. Like most of the tools on this list, GetResponse comes with analytics to improve marketing activities.

Advertising is also important. The most cost-effective way to get started is through Facebook ads and Google ads. Facebook ads allow you to run interest-based advertisements on a small budget and Google ads are directed at more intent-driven keyword advertising. Using them together can be powerful once you collect enough data to build remarketing audiences. It’s also worth noting that LinkedIn offers powerful advertising for business-to-business advertising.

In this day and age, a business does not exist without a website. Depending on your budget and skill level, there are a variety of tools you can use to get a website. The best approach is to get a web designer to make your website. Have a look at their portfolio and ask about how easy it would be for you to make changes to the website they create.

If you decide to build it yourself, there are plenty of places to start. If you are new to website building, I suggest starting with Wix or Squarespace. They offer plenty of website templates that are easy to set up and manage. If you are slightly more advanced, you can use WordPress. WordPress is highly customizable giving you more control. The downside is that WordPress websites can incur very high expenses from plugins, themes, security and more.

If you are selling a product or service, Shopify is a great solution because it offers a balance of customization and pricing. It’s built for eCommerce and integrates beautifully with some of the best marketing services.

Customer support can make or break your business. Whatsapp business makes it easy to chat with customers in real-time. This is a great solution for a smaller customer base. In terms of a useful tool for meeting clients for a consultation, use Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is stable and easy to use with a very good presentation mode. It also logs the lengths of each call so that you can easily manage hours for invoicing.

Legal is an overlooked part of most businesses. Failing to make sure that you are conducting business legally can result in expensive lawsuits and the loss of your business. You don’t need to pay an arm and a leg for a lawyer, you can start with making sure that your business is handling customer information and data responsibly. Fiverr is the best place to find a lawyer who can look at your business practices, policies and presence to make sure that you are compliant with the laws of the countries you operate in.

Lastly, managing finances is extremely important. Sage, is a great tool for invoicing and accounting in general. This is especially true for startups.

These are the tools that are great for new business owners, especially for business owners who want an established online presence. If you have the capacity, you can easily scale your business with the tools mentioned above. Additionally, an agency can assist you with getting your business off the ground. You can also use services like Fiverr to find the professionals you need for a remote team.

Mentors. Mentors are by far the best and most important resource for any new business.

Even if you have a groundbreaking new idea, there will always be aspects that others have already done. Successfully or not, it is tremendously helpful to learn from them.

You will already be making enough mistakes, why not avoid some by having a good mentor by your side?

Also, there is nothing wrong with having several mentors. Different people, different points of view, different specialities.

Natalya Spicker

A clear idea and message of the mission and vision of your business is key. Developing a bullet-proof go to market strategy is essential. Can a 5-year-old understand what your company does? If not, go back to the drawing board until it is that simply understand. Consider what Apple has done. Do that.

Beyond this, having a community of relevant prospect clients, and evangelists of your idea/product/service is probably the most powerful resource I can think of. This serves as a focus group, a soft launch, and more importantly a group of people who will give you honest feedback on your product and go-to-market strategy.

Artemiy Ustimenko

Managing Partner at Venuelab

We were developing a business based on the emerging technology we were using as customers. Turning a passion into a very specialized consultancy required bridging the technical expertise with the understanding of potential customers’ needs. The first thing that helped us a lot were symbiotic partnerships with technology vendors who turned out pragmatic and greatly supportive. The second one was events and conferences for startups that gave insights on how other entrepreneurs think and learn from their mistakes with an opportunity to bounce our value proposition against them.

Staying on top of the industry trends and a series of pivots to keep the offering relevant was another story, and we never stop finding ways to improve.

Dave Sengupta

Marketing Specialist at BORO SAWMILL

It’s always helpful to start a business with some years of “real-world experience” in the same, closest possible or related industry and market. Experience will help to plan and set up a “practical” layout of the business model. The word practical plays an important role here as it helps the entrepreneur to deploy the scarce startup human and financial resources in the best possible way. The practical approach will also help answer some of the difficult questions like – Whom to sell? Where to buy it? Whom to hire to play the role of influencing? How much credit shall we offer to X or Y companies and possibly many more such questions?

Creating a “guardrail” can be another useful resource. Well, the management strategists from B Schools will define as a “competitive advantage” I would prefer to call as a guardrail that will protect the entrepreneurs from possible derailments. My way of creating a guardrail will be to focus on the “niche” factor. To run a business successfully and for a longer period of time, a company needs to offer some sort of a niche product or service. The word niche doesn’t mean that the product or service will be the first of its kind in all possible ways or en route to the patent application but offering some form of exclusivity which the customers would value as a convenience.

Before starting a new business, the owner(s) and possible employee-partners go through some tough brainstorming sessions and obviously words like Break-Even Analysis, Sustainable Profits and Revenue per User etc. are discussed. These are important words and relates to pricing. I would consider skills to devise the best possible “pricing methodology” as another good resource tool. One has to be careful here, offering niche and exclusivity doesn’t guarantee higher prices. A smart entrepreneur needs to fall back on her/his practical experience and then devise a “customer willingness to pay” pricing strategy. This kind of pricing strategy will not only help to win prospective customers but also keep the possible competitors or new entrants guessing

I would also consider “hanging in there” as another useful resource to remain focused and not get distracted by hurdles that are natural to the business environment.

Romain Dekeyser

General Manager at Lime

Building a strong business starts with, according to my experience, three things:

1) Strong & reliable partners

2) A mentor or a network to help define, produce & sell the first MVPs

3) A communication strategy (website, social media, word of mouth, etc)

Lorenz Muck

Managing Director Operations

One of the most important things, in fact probably the most frequent reason for startups to never even come into existence, is to find the right cofounders. Without the right expertise, many startups don’t get off the ground, far from succeed.

For pitch decks, business plans, pilot projects, product-market fit and pivoting, templates and how-tos are essential. However, most startups fail due to not receiving or not knowing how to process feedback from the market, investors and experts right.

Many arguably proclaim this is an art. Chances are low. But those chances can be at the very least increased by the most important resource for startups:

Matchmakers who help you find the right experts who fit the innovation.

The most crucial recourses that one need to secure a start-up business was to create a great business plan to focus on and of course secure appropriate funding for your plan.

I was lucky enough to have a great network of individuals who have helped me along the way and my mentor/career coach who has expanded my vision broader. So meaning you have to surround yourself with appropriate people.

Also, any business comes with risks, challenges and unplanned delays therefore you have to be mentally prepared for those.

Expert Panel: The Power of Storytelling in Content Marketing

“Marketing is storytelling. The story of your product, built into your product. The ad might be part of it, the copy might be part of it, but mostly, your product and your service and your people are all part of the story. Tell it on purpose.”

Seth Godin

Storytelling as a way to connect with the brand, with the business or with the individual has been there for hundreds of years. However, only in the last decade marketing professionals have taken it to the next level. Teams of people are working on strategies finding ways to connect with clients and make them trust, believe in and become loyal to the brand using storytelling for content marketing as their go-to technique.

What story to tell? What is important to say? How to connect? Where to start? These were just a few from the long list of questions running through my head when I had my very first project on building a Recruitment Technology brand. Finding a tone of voice and correct narrative specific to the Recruitment Industry was a great challenge when I first started and it took months to get this going with confidence and bringing results. I will be honest, we are still working on it, perfecting our message, thinking of better ways to bring value to the industry and to the clients.

So here at Expert Circle, we thought why don`t we ask the experts for advice and to share their experience and knowledge in how to use storytelling for content marketing. We assembled a great collection of answers and we are delighted to share them with the world!

Enjoy the read,

Larysa Chaplin

What is Storytelling?

Neil Patel

Storytelling is the art of communicating your idea, message or event, by creatively weaving words, images, and sounds into a narrative. Visual stories, written stories, and verbal stories – this is the content we love.

When you tell a true story, your message is perceived as authentic. In the same way that live events get more retweets than general tweets on social media channels, your content will impact the lives of your target market, and improve your credibility.

Why should you use corporate storytelling in content marketing? We breathe visual stories. Even in the Stone Age, humans understood how to tell stories that evoked interest and made that emotional connection.

And, it’s one of the most effective ways to engage and persuade your audience.

Humans are born storytellers and adore visual communication. Storytelling gives life or meaning to a scenario and makes that emotional connection, provoking feelings of ecstasy, sorrow, or peace, and captivating your audience. This is exactly what you need when it comes to your digital marketing strategy.

It is little wonder that posts with visual stories and visual communication generate more Facebook and media channel shares than any other content type.

As it turns out, visual stories and communication (e.g., infographics, videos, memes, screenshots) get widely shared on major social media channels.

Your potential customers aren’t looking for another sales pitch or a proposal that sounds too good to be true. They’ve heard enough of those.

For example, when you write, use relevant images and great visual stories that pique people’s interest.

Or, if you’re recording a podcast, you could use emotion-triggering music and sounds. For video creation, you can use words, images, visual stories, and sounds at the same time.

A study conducted by Forrester Research found that 88% of executives and organizational decision-makers long to have conversations, not pushy sales presentations.

With visual stories, you can create and promote infographics, which have collectively generated over 2,500,000 million visitors and 41,142 backlinks for me, over a two-year span.

You can also create visual stories and content and submit it to authoritative media sites and platforms, such as Slideshare, Vimeo, and Animoto. This helps you gain a new target market and potential customers for your business.

Great Storytelling on Social Media

Gary Vaynerchuk

In a world where there’s an enormous amount of social content, if you don’t make someone stop what they are doing and create a response, you are going to lose. Whether that’s an action or an emotion, the true test of storytelling is how you feel or what you do after you consume it.

A few months ago I bought flowers for the entire NYC VaynerMedia office. It wasn’t a holiday and therefore it was entirely unexpected so it evoked a feeling of surprise and delight. People were pleased and the reaction was a mix of happiness, positivity and a boosted morale. If that day was Valentine’s Day it might have been a little bit more expected and the story would have been more cliche and therefore wouldn’t evoke as much of a response. It’s all about the setup, the punchline and hacking people’s expectations.

In a sea of a million stories, a great one is going to make you react.

When I sit here and evaluate the differences between blockbuster Hollywood and social media, I think about context. The actual story can be quite similar but you have to consider the room you’re telling it in.

If you’re telling a story from a park bench to three old guys playing chess you’re going to present it a little differently than you would share that same story in an auditorium at Radio City Music Hall. It all depends on the room you’re in and the context with which it lives.

Do people want fireworks and embellishments and fancy set design because they have paid $190 a ticket and dressed up and went to Broadway or are they willing to accept the 60-second story on social media in between checking emails or walking to lunch?

Storytelling in Marketing

Dennis Shiao

Most brands are poor at brand storytelling. They take the “brand” component too literally and make it all about them. Or they create content without a real story.

Done well, brand storytelling can be not only a differentiator but a memorable opportunity to draw and engage an audience.

Six questions to draw out brand stories by Debbie Williams:

  • What’s your reason for being?
  • What’s your history?
  • Who are your main characters?
  • What’s your corporate mission?
  • How have you failed?
  • Where are your gaps?

For a brand story to work, it must go beyond a brand’s products and services. “You have to create something that they [members of your audience] want to be a part of and show that you really ‘get’ who they are and what they need,”

Why Is Storytelling Important for Marketing?

Joydeep Bhattacharya

Successful businesses are built on effective stories. People love to see, read or hear stories because it creates a human connection based on empathy.

The best marketers in the world leverage the power of storytelling to improve branding and conversion rates. What do stories have to do with marketing?

A good story should be:

  • Contagious
  • Easy to understand
  • Emotive
  • Believable (unless it’s a fairy tale or a Quentin Tarantino film)
  • Useful
  • Inspiring
  • Inclusive

From oral storytelling in prehistoric times to hieroglyphic storytelling in Ancient Egypt to our modern-day movies, stories have always found a special place in our lives. When there are sufficient details and authentic emotions in the tale, the listener or reader is able to connect to a story easily – and brands can use this device to make people understand how their products add value to their lives:

Here are some of the primary reasons why storytelling is an absolute necessity for marketing:

  • It helps to build a deeper and stronger connection with the audience.
  • It adds a human element to your content and, thus, brand.
  • Storytelling goes beyond advertising; it makes people trust your brand much more easily.
  • It lets businesses engage with customers in a fragmented media world.
  • Stories helps bind your content together which otherwise might seem scattered.
  • Stories help share your brand vision in the most pleasant manner.
  • A business with a great story is able to defeat its competitors easily.
  • Stories are the most successful weapon to create brand loyalty, which means that people are much more willing to promote your product or brand by word-of-mouth marketing, which is the best way to popularize a business.

The essence of B2B storytelling

Amanda Sparks

The process begins with one crucial question that you have to answer:

What would the world look like without your product/service?

Although it may seem like an easy question to answer, chances are you’ll find it a bit hard to do that because we tend to take everything we have for granted.

Take a moment and imagine how your customers would live if they didn’t have computers, smartphones, or the Internet.

Then, think about the challenges they would have if they didn’t have your product or couldn’t use your service.

For example, if they didn’t have the invoicing software, they would have to use the expensive services of an accountant or a billing clerk, which would also take a lot more time.

Once you answer this question, you can become a storyteller.

Every organization can have a unique story because it has a unique mission, vision, and strategy to achieve them.

Sell to the heart and brain will follow- How does storytelling help with winning clients?

Every happy relationship consists of many moments spent together, shared experiences, and adventures, the best of which become stories to tell your grandchildren. Likewise, stories are the best way to create and develop your brand. People will not remember facts, numbers or features. But they will remember exciting and moving authentic stories. Or, as American poet and singer Maya Angelou says, “They will remember how you made them feel.”

Neuroscientists believe that listening to stories enhances people’s neuro-cognitive abilities. When people are emotionally involved, they can identify better with your brand and understand your values. Stories speak to your customer’s feelings and create an emotional affinity, allowing the more rational arguments to be heard. Emotion is what really drives our purchasing behaviours and buying decisions are always the result of a change in the customer’s emotional state. When you connect with customers’ emotions, the payoff can be huge. So if you want to win your customers, start talking to their heart.

One of the most powerful tools for creating emotions in your customers is storytelling. In an era of information overload, the only thing that truly sets you apart is your story.

Storytelling provides a human face to a brand and helps create an emotional relationship with it. Stories are powerful tools for attracting attention, and storytelling is a notable business skill, which enables you to interact with your customers on an emotional level, offering inspiration, motivation, as well as an opportunity to educate yourself. In addition, storytelling makes potential customers subconsciously choose products and services that tell such stories which fit their lives, dreams and wishes.

A story of how your brand came to life, your customer’s real stories, exciting stories in product development are more valuable than a well crafted advertisement.

But the story alone is not enough. It also needs to be told and shared.

Stories can be told and developed on different platforms, but it is essential to think about the experience of the people who are told the story and whether and how they can tell it to others and add to it.

Good storytelling skills have never been as vital as they are today. Storytelling is a great way to stand out, communicate your brand, introduce it to others, and build emotional bonds. The purpose of the story is to appeal to your target group and convey your values and goals through it.

Authenticity and relevance

One of the most critical qualities in sharing your story is authenticity and relevance. Still, it is also important to deliver the right message to the right people at the right time. Once you have created the story, developed it and thought about sharing it, your next step is to plan how to keep it updated. When working on this task, be sure to think about possible user-generated content. Then, when you find a way to make it work for you, it offers you an incredible amount of opportunities.

Last but not least, you have to create a strong content plan to produce engaging content. In the information society where a tremendous amount of different content is consumed, it is crucial to find the format, place and time that appeal to your target groups. It must match the image you are creating and be appropriate for the channel you are using. You need to offer real stories and real value to your followers, not bombard them with your product or service all the time. Also, don’t keep to one type of media – use pictures, videos, graphs and other styles and do it consistently.

Storytelling is the ultimate tool of persuasion.

You can create an iconic brand by designing and constantly developing your unique story, telling it and adding to it and keeping it updated. Brands, as well as individuals who tell stories –emotional and genuine stories- connect with their customers in far deeper level than their competitors.

So what your story would be? And how would you make your customers fall in love?

Of course there is a lot of planning to be done but when a story is told in such a way that it connects with your visitors they are ready to buy.

I think the best way to get this done is to start your story with a problem, probably something that your product solves, and then how life would be after using your product, this is to tell visitors they can live a stress-free life after using your product, and then you introduce your product as the only solution.

Some points to keep in mind while writing a story are

  • Your product solves the problem.
  • Focusing the customer as the hero of the story is very helpful.
  • Don’t add any distractions like a link to other pages and more.

Precision in storytelling

David Leonhardt

Storytelling is the essence of sales, whether it’s a product, a service or an idea. The most common element of storytelling that marketers need to use is precision.

There are actually two reasons that precision is crucial. The most commonly cited reason has nothing to do with marketing or sales; it’s for credibility.

Simply put, you sound more credible saying that a tool got you 523 sign-ups than saying it got you 500. That is because when people don’t have the numbers at their finger tips, they tend to make up round numbers. If you give a highly precise-sounding number, people assume the number is real, proven, true. It doesn’t sound made-up.

But any storyteller can tell you the importance of precision also to captivating an audience. That’s because a story works best when people feel like it’s real and tangible. Vague words don’t paint vivid pictures. Adjectives don’t work as well as precise nouns. Adverbs don’t work as well as precise verbs. Paint a picture so real that prospects want to reach out and touch your story.

That’s the power of precision in storytelling.
